Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels in Philadelphia, PA

Our skin suffers a lot of stress as we age from the effects of the sun, environment, and other elements, often making us look older. Chemical peels give way to better skin that is smoother and softer. At World Wellness Health Institute, board-certified physician, Dr. Daniel Lebowitz treats people living in Bala Cynwyd and Philadelphia, PA, with chemical peels to remove damaged layers of skin and reveal a rejuvenated, fresher appearance.

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a cosmetic treatment that rejuvenates the skin by removing dry or damaged layers to reveal new skin. The amount of skin removed depends on the strength of the chemical peel used. Most chemical peels are considered superficial or light peels, as well as medium strength peels.

With superficial or light peels, the top layer of skin is removed in order to even out the skin tone and result in a smoother complexion. Superficial or light peels remove the top layer of the skin and are intended to even out texture and brighten the skin. With superficial peels, there is no recovery period, but patients may require more treatments to have the aesthetic goal they want.

A medium peel targets deeper layers of skin in order to diminish or erase wrinkles and lines. This peel also erases deeper sun damage and other skin discolorations; however, because medium peels are a little stronger, they take more time to perform. Following the treatments, it is often necessary to apply cool compresses to cool the skin. It takes about a week to fully heal from the chemical peel.

Benefits of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are very popular because they remove damaged skin and erase the signs of aging not to mention:

  • Cost less than many cosmetic treatments

  • Take much less time

  • Require minimal or no recovery

How are Chemical Peels Performed?

Depending on the level of chemical peel chosen, the process is fairly straightforward. The skin is cleansed with a prescription-grade facial cleanser to remove any excess dirt, oil or makeup on the face. A solution is then brushed on the face. During this process, the chemical peel removes the targeted layers of skin. As the peel removes the skin, it becomes lighter to show the peel is working. When it is complete, the peel is removed, and cold compresses and a neutralizing solution are applied to relieve any discomfort and help with relaxation. Chemical peels typically take about 30 to 90 minutes.

Chemical Peel Preparation

Prior to having a chemical peel, it is necessary to prep the skin with a pre-treating agent, such as Retin-A, alpha-hydroxy acid or a bleaching agent depending on the level of peel used. For people who have frequent fever blisters or cold sores, Dr. Lebowitz may prescribe an antiviral medication to prevent a flair-up from the peel. It is important that people who are in the sun wear sunblock prior to and after having a chemical peel to protect the skin. If possible, we recommend patients come to their appointment for a chemical peel without any make-up on their faces.

Chemical Peel Recovery

There is minimal recovery after having a chemical peel and will depend on the strength of the peel. For most people, there is some redness immediately following the treatment, which subsides within a few days, followed by slight peeling away of the dead skin to reveal fresher, smoother skin. Once the process is complete, the complexion is bright and revitalized. The results of chemical peels are different with each type of peel.

How Much Do Chemical Peels Cost?

The cost of a chemical peel varies with each patient based on what type of peel is performed and the number of treatments needed to achieve your desired aesthetic goal. We can discuss the costs, as well as our payment options  along with financing during a consultation with Dr. Lebowitz.

Are Chemical Peels Right for Me?

Chemical peels are ideal for anyone who shows the negative effects of the sun and aging. If your skin appears dull or seems to have noticeable sun damage, scars from acne or visible lines and wrinkles, chemical peels may be right for you.
