Botox Q & A

by Daniel Lebowitz, MD

What’s Botox?

Botox is a drug made from botulinum toxin that’s used to diminish lines and wrinkles. When Botox is injected into muscles, it reduces muscle movement by temporarily blocking signals that tell muscles to contract.

When used for cosmetic treatment, Botox diminishes lines and wrinkles on the face and neck. Since a precise dose is injected into specific muscles, it doesn’t interfere with your facial expressions, leaving you with fewer wrinkles and a natural appearance.

Botox may also be used to prevent pain caused by severe migraine headaches. It’s also considered for other medical treatments, such as overactive bladder and excessive armpit sweating.

Why is Botox recommended for moderate-to-severe wrinkles?

While a variety of aesthetic treatments are available to treat fine lines, Botox is uniquely recommended for moderate-to-severe wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead furrows. Specific groups of muscles create these facial expressions when they contract. In your younger years, skin bounces back after you smile or laugh. But as you age and skin loses strength and elasticity, the expression lines become permanent creases, and over time, the creases become deep wrinkles. The only way to diminish them is by preventing the muscles from pulling the skin.

What can you expect before, during and after Botox treatment?

The person administering the injection is just as important as the injection itself. You want a physician with experience and expertise — one who deeply understands facial anatomy and how each muscle interacts with other muscles. Dr. Lebowitz is an expert in anatomically-based procedures.

Before getting a Botox treatment, Dr. Lebowitz meets with you to examine your skin and talk about the changes you want to see in your appearance. Taking time to talk about your expectations is essential because Dr. Lebowitz wants to ensure you’re happy with the results.

Botox is injected with a fine-gauge needle, so you’ll feel little or no discomfort during the procedure and you won’t need anesthesia. The injections don’t take long but the total time required for the procedure depends on how many muscles are being treated.

Once the injections are finished, you can apply makeup and get back to your daily routine. You may notice an immediate difference, but you’ll begin to see the full effect in 24-48 hours. Since each Botox injections lasts about 4 months, you may decide to repeat the procedure sometime down the road. With repeat treatments, you may get longer lasting results.
